Mattress FAQs

The “best” mattress is the mattress that you find the most comfortable and that helps you get the sleep you need. What’s right for one person may not be right for you. No matter how many mattress reviews you read, the right mattress needs to be customized to your needs. To help you find the best mattress, follow these main steps. First, compare types of mattresses, which include foam, innerspring, and hybrid. You’ll also want to test the mattress in store or by leveraging a free sleep trial. Be sure you also check return policies and fully understand the warranty. For more help, read my mattress buying guide!

Did you know you spend about a third of your life on your mattress? This is why investing in the right mattress is so important, but that doesn’t mean that high quality should have to cost you more. The price of a mattress depends on many factors, including mattress type, size, materials, and durability. While mattresses sold today range in price from $100 or less to $5,000 or more, I believe most shoppers should be able to find the right discount mattress for under $2,600 without sacrificing quality.

One of the biggest mistakes to avoid when shopping for a mattress is to assume that price equals quality. It’s my mission to help you find the comfort and quality you need at the price you can afford.

Cleaning your mattress regularly may help reduce allergens and extend the life of your mattress. First, make sure that you clean spills as soon as they happen to help prevent mold growth. Also, make sure you wash your bedding at least once a week, which will help minimize the amount of oil, sweat, and dirt that will get into your mattress. Your mattress itself should be cleaned no less than twice a year, or once every season. Thankfully, it’s relatively simple to clean your mattress and it can be done using household cleaning products including your vacuum and baking soda. The products you’re able to use will also depend on the type of mattress and materials covering your mattress.

Additionally, you can keep your mattress clean with one of my mattress protectors. They help keep sweat, oils, spills, and dirt away from your mattress!

The majority of high-quality mattresses have a lifespan of between 7-10 years. How often you should replace your mattress depends on how it’s cared for, the materials it's made of, and durability. In general, foam and latex mattresses can last longer than average. For optimal results, it’s best if you replace your mattress every 10 years, or when you begin to notice a loss in comfort level or support.

In general, as soon as your mattress is no longer providing support and comfort, it’s time to dispose of it. For our customers here's what we offer:

For mattress customers outside of California: If your new mattress and foundation is delivered via BOBtastic White Glove Delivery, the team will remove your old mattress and foundation. Old mattresses and foundations must be in safe and sanitary condition. This service is not available for mattresses and foundations that are delivered via BOBtastic Threshold Delivery, No-Contact Delivery or FedEx.

For California customers (with White Glove mattress deliveries): The delivery team will remove your old mattress and foundation. Old mattresses and foundations must be in safe and sanitary condition.

For California customers (with Threshold and No-Contact mattress deliveries): If your old mattress and foundation is readily available at your threshold, the delivery team will remove your old mattress and foundation. Old mattresses and foundations must be in safe and sanitary condition.

For California customers (with FedEx deliveries): In accordance with the California Used Mattress Recovery and Recycling Act, we've teamed up with Dolly to offer free mattress removal for your old mattress after your FedEx delivery has been completed. After you've received a brand-spankin' new mattress from us via FedEx, here's what you should do:
  • Schedule a time to have your old mattress picked up by clicking here.

  • Simply enter your full name, zip code, Bob's Order #, and preferred pickup day.

  • Once that's all set, you'll receive an email from Dolly with next steps.

Plus you can learn more about Bob’s mattress recycling fee here. You can also call your local municipality, sanitation department, or garbage collector. Also, look to see if there is a mattress recycler in your local area.

A big piece of the finding-the-right-mattress puzzle is knowing your own sleep style. The right mattress will depend on whether you’re a side, stomach, or back sleeper — or a mix of all three. For side sleepers, the best mattress will contour to your body to keep your spine aligned. Plush is a good place to start. For back sleepers, memory foam mattresses get rave reviews. Innerspring and hybrids bode well for those who prefer to sleep on their stomach. But in the end, what comfortable means is unique to you.

A hybrid mattress includes multiple layers of memory foam, cotton, latex or gel, as well as a layer of innerspring coils. In essence, it provides plenty of support and a little bit of bounce. The top layer, also referred to as the comfort layer, typically consists of a couple inches of memory foam to customize support and provide pressure relief, especially for people who experience frequent back pain. Beneath the top layer is an innerspring system that stabilizes the mattress. A hybrid mattress is ideal for couples as the combination of memory foam and coils helps to reduce motion transfer.

While there is no one-mattress-fits-all for conquering back pain, finding a mattress that will provide proper alignment between your spine, neck, and head is key to alleviating back pain. The mattresses that are most well-known and tested for encouraging proper alignment fall within the hybrid or memory foam category. Also look out for mattresses described as more plush than firm, but make sure the mattress isn’t so soft that you lose the necessary support.

A mattress in a box isn’t a new concept – I’ve been delivering discount mattresses this way for nearly two decades! A memory foam mattress is either rolled or folded so it can be shipped in a smaller box that’s easier to manage. All you need to do is unpack, unfold and wait for the mattress to decompress – then voila! You’ve got a new bed!

While there are many traditional mattress materials that must be left out of the construction of boxed mattresses to allow them to be compressed, there are many new and innovative materials of comparable quality to ensure durability and proper support.
